Feature interview: Rohit Sharma….

There are many batsmen, in the cricket history who had done such deeds, which many of the other ones still dream to do, like scoring double hundreds, having an average of 50+ in all the formats( Test, Odi & t20i’s), or having more than three t20i centuries to your name. Many dream of having the most number of sixes to their name in the world or for their nation in every format and some dream of achieving the golden bat in every ICC tournament, be it the Cricket world cup or ICC champions trophy or even the T20 World Cup. But, only few are there, who are able to achieve such feats, all in one! Yes, you can have an idea that about whom I am talking. He’s the one and only, the vice captain of team India in ICC tournaments, and got selected in the ICC team of the year, for five times, in 2014, 2016,2017,2018 & 2019, ICC Odi player of the year in 2019 and Arjuna award winner of 2015, Mr. Rohit Sharma!!!

Before beginning the interview, let’s go through some of the breathtaking stats of Rohit the Hitman of India:-

1. He is the only batsman in the cricket history to hit more than one odi 200’s. He had 209 vs australia (2013), 264 vs Sri Lanka (2014) and 208* also vs Sri Lanka (2017). The next bests have only one to their name, be it Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Gayle, Martin Guptill or Fakhar zaman.

2. He has most number of t20i’s hundreds to his name, i.e. 4. The next bests are Colin Munro and Glenn Maxwell (3 each).

3. He has the record of most hundreds scored in a single edition of a Cricket world cup i.e 5 in 2019 CWC. He also has the joint most hundreds in all the world cups history, i.e 6, which is equal to Sachin Tendulkar’s record.

4. He has been the most successful captain in the IPL,i.e he won it 4 times, in 2013,2015,2017& 2019. And the only player in IPL history to have a hat-trick and a hundred to his name. He was the first player to grab a hat-trick in the IPL history, for Deccan chargers.

5. He has hit the joint fastest t20i hundred of just 35 balls against Sri Lanka in 2017. David Miller also achieved the feat in 2017.

6. He has played more than 100 t20i’s for India, which is most by any Indian.

7. He has second best test score on debut by an indian i.e. 177 vs Windies in 2013, just behind Dhawan’s 187 vs australia, the same year in March.

8. He is the first player to score 100s in both the innings of a test match as an opener and has broken the record of shimron hetmyer from Windies, of hitting most sixes in a test series.

Many more such records, are held by this legendary batsmen who began his career for Indian team in 2007 t20 CWC and now is the heartbeat of 1.3 billion Indians.

Me:-So, Rohit, I wanna ask you some small questions about your cricketing career and more. First of all you tell , that how’s your life going on and what challenges you are facing in your career?

Rohit:- ya, I’m fine and living my career as a dream and everything is going fine and smooth in life. And about challenges I can say that, I have to work hard to take my team to the top spot in rankings and the most on my shot selection against the variety bowling lineups. Rest everything is good.

Okay, so here we go-

Q1. So tell me Rohit, as you have many records to your name, but which is the one, which you admire most and very proud of?

A1. Ya, though I am very happy and proud of my one day international records, of most double hundreds and the highest odi score, but the most special record which make me feel proud the most is, taking a hat-trick against my most successful team, which I captained and took to victory four times, the MI. I actually joined the cricket as a bowler, but my coach noticed my batting skills and sent me up the order and I became the opening batsman. But I concentrated on my bowling too. I usually don’t bowl like bhajji and other off spinners , I just pushed the ball. But it was a very awesome moment for me to get a hat-trick and I will be the first one to do so. It’s not easy to take wickets one after other and especially of the good batsmen like JP Duminy, Bhajji and Abhishek Nayar, who play tremendously well in the format. But I was really happy and overjoyed to get them out in a hurry and make a record.

Q2. Your favourite innings of all time and all format, which you had ever played?

A2. There, are a lot of them, but the one which is most close to my heart is the 264 vs Sri Lanka. I just enjoyed batting there and just wanted to keep going and going. Batting was looking so easy there, that I thought that I’m inside a video game, and all you have to do is just smash the every ball into the stands.

Q3. With which batsman, you enjoy most while, batting?

A3. There are many of them, but the best ones are Shikhar Dhawan, who just makes batting look easy. The nickname Gabbar given to him, suits him very much as he bats fearlessly and boldly. He just plays his best game and is completely tension free. He enjoys batting so much that, it seems like batting is made only for him. We used to play in under 19 together and he was my roommate. We shared a lot of things and had fun. Many of the teammates called our partnership as Jay and viru.

Q4. The teammate who feared you most?

A4. Obviously, it’s Yuvi paaji. As he was our senior so he used to rag me. And I remember when, I was in the T20 World Cup 2007 team, I was very young and didn’t knew much about the team and habits of others. I only knew some of the young players of my age. So slowly I came to knew, that in the bus in which our squad travelled, where sat Sachin Tendulkar, and where the other seniors, so I also sat at a seat. Then Yuvi paaji was seen coming from other side, while chewing and headphones and wearing a glass, lost in his own and I was really a big fan of paaji and when he came near me, I just said hello to him and he just nodded his head and asked me that, “do you know who sits here?”, and I was blank. Then he politely like an elder brother told me to get up and sit anywhere else and from that moment I was just afraid of him to talk. In the whole Ireland tour, when he won the man of the match, I just said congratulations to him and he also said “thankyou”. I remember that, against England when he hit six sixes, he must be in a good mood and after the match he asked me to go for a dinner and from there our bonding started and from then everything was comfortable.

Q5. We had came to know that , one day you were traveling in a mumbai local and you dropped your kit bag from the train, is that true?

A5. Yes, it’s absolutely true. That day I used to play in Ranji, or sometime before that, I was traveling in a local and you know that, in the train there’s a lot of rush. So in the moving train, due to lot of rush , I dropped my bag on the platform and the train has just began to move. So I requested the TT to please help me, as I was having a match, and I had already dropped the bag somewhere in the climbing crowd and wanted him to search my bag, so he told me to rush in the backside compartments and then to the platform but when I reached to platform, the bag was gone. And so when I reached the ground, I was late and coach gave me the punishment of just Fielding and no batting, which was really a harsh punishment for me and from now then, I became very cautious and responsible for everything.

Q6. Who is the most toughest bowler to play?

A6. It’s Dale Steyn, as his bowl keeps swinging, and due to extra pace, it allows you to select the shot in a very short period of time and that’s why he’s one of the best and dangerous bowlers in the world.

Q7. Best prankster in your team?

A7. Bhajji pa. No one can take his place. We’re playing together for a very long period of time and from starting he used to play prank on almost everyone , juniors Mostly like me .

Q8. We have came to know that you also like throwing cakes on whosoever birthday party it is. Is it so?

A8. Ya, it’s also true as in the birthday parties we just make the person bath Fully in the cake and I just like to throw cakes on others face. I’m lucky that, my birthday don’t falls in the Indian team calendar, otherwise all will make me bath in cake. In IPL it’s okay as there are some foreign players, who don’t throw cake as, they consider it for eating, not playing with it.

Q9. Your idol batsman?

A9. There are many, from whom I had learnt this art and practiced by seeing them playing. First of all , Sachin Tendulkar, then Brian Lara and sir viv Richards. They all are legends and it’s just a treat to watch them playing. I grew up learning their playing styles and imitated some of their shots like square cut and cover drives.

Q10. Okay, last question before we end this interview. How you felt, when you realized that you weren’t a part of the 2011 WC winning Indian team?

A10. Ya it’s really painful and said to not to be a part in the world Cup winning team, instead I was the part of the 2007 T20 WC winning side and 2013 champions trophy, but world cup is an emotion. After 28 years, on my home ground , such a big win which filled the hearts of 1.3 billion Indians with proud, was just amazing. It hurts to not to be a contributor in that historical victory, as you get to be a part of such win , just one or two times in your career or life, but it was due to my form and injuries, due to which I lost my position to suresh raina. But it’s okay, as the cup came to our home and Sachin Tendulkar and ms Dhoni were the main reasons for it. It was just amazing!

So, this is our amazing and beautiful interview with the Hitman of India who is now ruling the hearts all around the world. Rohit, it’s been a pleasure to get some good time with you and your intersting anecdotes. thank you for being a part of this interview!
